What is ChatGPT
ChatGPT is a tool you can chat with that can reply to messages, help write text, and work with images or voice, depending on the version. You can use it to ask questions, brainstorm ideas, write notes, or even talk with it using your voice.
How to use ChatGPT on Web or Mobile
- Go to the ChatGPT website or open the app on your phone.
- Log in or sign up for a free account.
- If you pay for a plan, you can choose different AI models to use.
- Type or say what you want to ask.
- ChatGPT will give a reply.
- You can change your question or ask something new at any time.
How to use ChatGPT on your computer
- Open the app or press a key shortcut to open the pop up chat (option plus space on Mac or Alt plus space on Windows).
- Type your message or speak using voice to text.
- Click the voice icon to talk with ChatGPT live.
- Click the plus icon to upload a file or photo. On desktop you can also take a screenshot.
- After ChatGPT replies, you can continue the chat as normal.
How to set ChatGPT to fit your style
If you keep telling ChatGPT the same things every time (like write in a friendly tone), you can set those instructions once.
- Go to your profile and look for custom instructions.
- Switch on the option to always apply those instructions.
- Type the details you want ChatGPT to keep in mind.
- It will then remember them for every new conversation unless you change it.
How to make a custom version of ChatGPT
If you pay for the higher plan, you can make your own special ChatGPT.
- Click on GPTs in the side panel.
- Click on Create.
- Talk with the setup tool and add the instructions you want.
- You can give your custom ChatGPT a name and define how it should help.
This makes ChatGPT act in a way you want, like a helper for certain tasks.
Features you can use beyond chat
Projects
Group your chats into different themes like work, school, or ideas.
- Create a new project and give it a name.
- Inside a project you can add files, instructions, or chat normally.
- You can switch between projects and keep each separate.
Scheduled Tasks
You can ask ChatGPT to do something at a set time, even when you are not online.
- Start a new task with details on what and when.
- ChatGPT will show the task in your chat.
- You can edit it later if needed.
- When the time comes, ChatGPT does the task and sends you a notification or email.
Canvas
You can ask ChatGPT to make a neat page or layout inside your chat.
- Ask to create a page or document.
- ChatGPT shows it in a split screen.
- You can click Edit to revise just that page while still seeing your main chat.
Agents
These are smart helpers that can go online and do tasks for you, like fill forms, grab web info, or make images.
- Select the agent tool or type slash agent in your chat.
- Describe what you want it to do.
- The agent tries to do it for you automatically.
How to use voice and images
Voice mode
- Click the voice icon in your chat.
- A dot or wave appears on screen—you can speak then.
- ChatGPT will reply with voice.
- You can pause or stop it any time just like in a normal talk.
Image mode
- Click the plus icon to add a file or photo.
- On web, you can drag and drop or upload from cloud storage.
- On desktop, you can take a screenshot or choose a file.
- On mobile, you can upload or take a photo, and mark parts of it if you like.
- Add your question or description and send.
Managing your ChatGPT data
Memory and training use
ChatGPT may keep memory of your chats to tailor responses and can use those chats to help train future models. You can turn these off if you want:
- Open settings on web or app.
- Find data controls.
- Turn off memory or model improvement options.
- Save or confirm your choice.
Deleting chats or archiving them
To delete all your past chats:
- Go to settings, open data controls, and choose delete all.
To delete just one chat:
- On web or app, hover or tap on the chat name and choose delete.
To save chats but hide them:
- Long press or click to archive, and it will move to an archive folder.
- Tap again if you want to unarchive later.
